The Ebor Handicap

The Ebor is a Class 2 flat handicap run at York racecourse over one mile and six furlongs.

It is open to horses of either sex and was first run in 1843.

The name is derived from ‘Eboracum,’ the Roman name for the city of York.

The race was devised by the clerk of the course at the time, John Orton.

Despite its long history, only one horse has won the Ebor twice; Flint Jack in 1922 and 1923.

Dual Champion Hurdle winner Sea Pigeon was successful in 1979, carrying a record 10st.

He wasn’t the first Champion Hurdler to win the Ebor however, as Brown Jack was victorious in 1931.

Mudawin is the biggest-priced winner, landing the 2006 Ebor at 100/1.

Lester Piggott has the best record of any jockey in the race, with five wins to his name.

The most successful trainer is Tom Dawson, who had five Ebor winners between 1844 and 1867.

In 2008 the Ebor Festival was lost to waterlogging, so a replacement for the Ebor was run at Newbury.

In 2019 prize money for the Ebor rose to £1million.
