Nakoda Elementary School (NES) is a kindergarten to grade 5 First Nations community school located in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, west of Calgary, Alberta in the community of Morley. At NES we believe in the value of music and its importance to the culture of the Stoney Nakoda First Nations. Last month the grade 5’s were invited to the National Music Centre in Calgary to watch a performance by The Sampler Cafe. These beat makers and producers inspired us to bring back the turntables and explore sampling and looping techniques. During this process we not only discovered a fun way to interpret Aleissa Cara’s song Stay but also found some motivated dancers. Thanks CBC for the opportunity to discover our own voices. NES is working to develop talented and confident musical children who will grow into musical adults. Thank you CBC for helping us on this journey. Visit the NES Music Program on Soundcloud, our YouTube channel and Vimeo websites to listen to more projects and recordings prepared and performed by the students at NES.
